Tips for Controlling Termites
A colony of termites can destroy wood in your home--hollowing out beams, damaging walls, and ravaging floors. They will also devour drapes, carpets, vinyl, linoleum, PVC pipe, and underground cables. Here are a few tips to prevent termite invasion:

• Repair roof and plumbing leaks quickly. Termites can survive and thrive above ground with an available water supply.

• Use a termite-resistant barrier, such as concrete, steel, or masonry, between any wood and the soil on your home's exterior. Do not use soft  materials, such as plastic, rubber, plaster, or vinyl, as these are susceptible to termite destruction, as well.

• Store firewood away from your home and do not attach wooden trellises to your exterior. Keep your property free of wood debris, tree stumps, scrap lumber, and sawdust as these are excellent breeding grounds for termite colonies. 

• Trim bushes, shrubs, and trees away from your exterior. Keep mulch, wood chips, and soil below the point where your foundation meets your brick or other exterior and don't let leaves accumulate in your gutters and drains These all provide easy paths for termites to enter your home.

• Keep all openings in your home--windows, doors, ventilation exits in your attic and roof, crawl spaces, etc.--covered with mesh screens.

• Seal nail holes and cracks in exposed wood with a termite-resistant material to prevent easy access by drywood termites.
